Ian McKee is a Brazilian born, American educated, Sustainability and Green Building consultant credentialed by the US Green Building Council.  His firm EcoArenas was founded in February of 2009 with the mission of applying Green Building principles to sports facilities and stadium architecture.  His passion for soccer and vision of a sustainably built environment set him on a journey to design and build the “EcoArenas” of the future.

The Copa Verde Plan

On January 1, 2009, McKee wrote the Copa Verde Plan for Brazil, a plan for the largest, coordinated Green Building effort thus far attempted; one which would see the LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification of stadiums and related infrastructure projects including, hotels, hospitals and airports; built ahead of the global sporting events Brazil will be hosting.  The legacy, McKee believes, can be greener Brazilian cities and a showcase of sustainable design and construction in the most advanced, and environmentally friendly, stadium portfolio in the world.  This, is where McKee hopes, beautiful design and construction, will meet Brazil’s “Beautiful Game.”

These global sporting events offer a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Brazil to transform its economy into the most “advanced” and sustainable economy on the planet.

Education & Career

McKee was born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil.  He left his home country at the age of 14 to pursue an education in the United States where he earned a BA in Economics at Bowdoin College in Maine.  From college, McKee was recruited by investment bank Goldman Sachs in New York City, where, for 5 years he advised some of the world’s largest institutional investors.  While at Goldman, McKee was also part of the Brazil Strategy Team, which had the task of creating a local bank presence in São Paulo and build Goldman’s first sales & trading business in South America.  In 2003, McKee left Goldman to pursue a digital media business in Los Angeles.  In 2009 McKee founded EcoArenas, LLC and became a LEED, green building consultant.

Passion for Sports

As a young boy in Brazil Ian grew up with two passions; he played “Futebol de Salão” or Futsal, a form of indoor soccer, and he sailed in the Optimist dingy class.  In 1987, Ian had the great honor to represent Brazil in the 1987 Optimist World Championships in Andijk, Holland.

At Bowdoin College, Ian captained the varsity soccer team his senior year and helped his team reach the regional NCAA finals.

To this day, Ian is an avid sportsman, playing in amateur soccer leagues and windsurfing or surfing when time and conditions permit.
